The Dept of Geography, Sustainability, Community, and Urban Studies (GSCU) at UConn is hiring a fully-funded MA/PhD student with an interest in GIS and Community Studies to begin in Fall 2024
We seek a student with a strong interest and passion for learning and applying GIS skills and in particular Web GIS, spatial database management, and visualization, to community-based research projects. This two-year project is a collaboration with UConn’s Research on Resilient Cities, Racism, and Equity (RRCRE) initiative, and will involve hands-on experience in building a GIS database and web applications to explore neighborhood change in the Greater Hartford Area to improve the well-being of residents. There is tremendous potential for the student to develop a unique thesis/dissertation topic that builds upon this project.
Student funding will be a combination of research assistantships (RA) and teaching assistantships (TA) for up to 4 years in the case of a PhD student, subject to satisfactory performance. UConn offers a competitive funding package for graduate students (e.g., the 9-month Level-2 stipend for academic year 2024-2025 is $29,214 and includes a tuition waiver).
Required Qualifications
● Experience with GIS mapping and data visualization
● Experience and skills in spatial database management
● Strong communication skills (in written and spoken English)
● Passion for urban and community studies
Preferred Qualifications
● Prior experience with ESRI’s web application products (e.g. Story Maps, Dashboards, Experience Builder)
● Prior experience with open GIS, web development, and web hosting (e.g, QGIS, JavaScript, HTML/CSS, GitHub, Mapbox)
● Previous experience with community-engaged research projects
If interested, contact Professor Peter Chen (peter.chen@uconn.edu) and Professor Carol Atkinson-Palombo (carol.atkinson-palombo@uconn.edu) with your CV by June 25th.
